Begin with a feeling worth expressing
Before collecting references, decide what the audience should feel and understand. A materials brand might need to communicate precision and warmth. A cultural space might need energy and openness. A short creative intention gives every image a shared purpose.
Build a visual vocabulary
Choose a few relationships to explore: hard and soft surfaces, close details and generous space, daylight and deep shadow. Consider framing, colour and texture together. A recognisable direction comes from repeated choices, with enough variation to keep the work alive.
The strongest images belong to the same world without telling the same story.
Plan the collection
A lead image that establishes the mood
Details that reveal materials and character
Wider views that provide context
Quiet compositions with space for typography
Design for the places images will appear
Test a direction on a wide website hero, a narrow mobile crop and a small editorial card. Keep the subject clear and leave room where a headline needs to sit. A beautiful image becomes more useful when its composition survives different formats.
Edit for coherence
Review the collection as a whole. Remove images that compete with the central idea, even when they work individually. Then check the pacing: an expressive image benefits from a quieter one beside it. Art direction is as much about selection as creation.
